Bosch TCA6001UC Benvenuto B20 Thermoblock 15-Bar-Pump Fully Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Bosch TCA6001UC Benvenuto B20 Thermoblock 15-Bar-Pump Fully Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After years of use, I replaced my Saeco machine with the Bosch B20. I did a lot of research, and I think this is a great machine for the money. It is fast to start up, and it makes great coffee and espresso. The steam rod/hot water dispenser is also top notch. The Germans do a great job engineering a great boiler. Water is super hot and there is no wait. If you make tea, it is a lot faster than waiting for a kettle.
I never had any customer service issues, so I cannot really address the machine from that angle. Finding the cleaning pods was not that hard, IMHO.
The only complain I have is that the water tank is a small, and must be refilled often if you drink a lot of coffee or make a lot when you have guests.

Brew cafe-quality espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and more at the touch of a button with this easy-to-use 1300-watt espresso machine. Its user-friendly control panel makes it easy to select from programmable brewing options, to set the strength and size preference, and choose between brewing one cup or two cups simultaneously. Thanks to its durable stainless-steel boiler and Thermoblock 15-bar pressure system, each shot brews at the proper temperature and comes out with a thick layer of golden crema. The machine's unique AROMASWIRL system ensures maximum flavor extraction, and its fast heat-up time allows for rapid switching between brewing and steaming. A frothing attachment comes included for frothing milk for creamy cappuccinos or producing instant hot water for tea or hot chocolate.
For added convenience, the unit provides a 14-ounce bean hopper and an adjustable, built-in, conical-type burr grinder for creating freshly ground coffee, as well as a separate chamber for pre-ground coffee, which comes in handy if the hopper contains regular beans, but guests would prefer decaf after dinner. Other thoughtful design details include a removable 70-ounce water tank, a built-in water filter, a built-in cup heater for pre-warming cups and mugs, and economy automatic shut-off after three hours, as well as a removable grounds container, a removable and dishwasher-safe drip tray, and automatic cleaning, descaling, and rinsing functions. Backed by The Good Housekeeping Seal, the UL-listed espresso machine measures 22-4/5 by 14-1/5 by 16-1/5 inches and carries a two-year limited warranty.

Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System Review

Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're reading this review, you're most likely doing research and trying to decide between the Keurig line (B40,B50,B60), the Tassimo, or the Senseo. Out of those three, the Keurig is the best looking, the most durable, has the best heating and pumping mechanism, and has the largest variety of coffees and teas available. The Tassimo's versatility is tempting, but variety of coffees is lacking, the machine is a first-run model that does not feel as quality as the Keurig (I could barely find a piece of metal in the entire thing), and it cannot be set to warm itself up like the Keurig. The Senseo isn't bad and I may even consider getting it as a second machine, but it is kind of lame how you need two pods to brew an 8 oz cup of coffee. Considering the price of pods that I was looking at, it would outprice both the Keurig and the Tassimo for daily usage.
Between the Keurig models (B40,B50,B60), I spent a lot of time trying to decide and eventually went with the B60, mainly because the B60 is the only model that brews 3 different sizes of coffee--5.25, 7.25, and 9.25oz. The B50, a favorite amongst shoppers, does not offer the 9.25oz size. This large size allows my Oxo travel mug to almost completely fill after using one Extra Bold K-cup. As an added benefit of the B60, you get beautiful blue LEDs behind the display and the water tank, as well as a polished chrome handle and polished chrome outer-ring to the display. It looks very modern and very classy in my otherwise boring kitchen. Highly recommended.

Medelco #4 Cone Permanent Coffee Filter Review

Medelco #4 Cone Permanent Coffee Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this filter for about two weeks now. It is my first permanent filter, and I am very happy with its performance. It is solidly built, and with proper care should last quite a while. I debated on the high-end swiss gold filter, but thought the price was too high, so I figured I'd take a chance with this one with free shipping. I can't imagine how much better/different the swiss gold would be if any? I am using a fairly fine ground from a good, flat burr grinder, and have had no issues of grounds/sludge in my coffee. I also purchased a new Zojirushi coffee maker at the same time, so read my review on that as well if you're in the market for a good machine. This filter fits the Zoji perfectly.

Cuisinart DGB-700BC Grind-and-Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker, Brushed Chrome/Black Review

Cuisinart DGB-700BC Grind-and-Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker, Brushed Chrome/Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this coffee maker around Christmas and was a little concerned over the prior reviews that stated it uses too much coffee. The chemist in me had to do the experiment.
A standard issue coffee from Starbucks was ground to a standard medium grind for coffee makers of this type. The coffee was measured on a 1 gram precision scale according to the specification on the Starbucks coffee bag (2Tbs per 6oz cup) to make 6 cups of coffee. The coffee grinds weighed to be 54 grams. The same coffee beans from the same bag were ground in the coffee maker set to 6 cups and strong. The coffee grinds were then measured on the same scale and wouldn't you know...it was exactly 54 grams.
For my coffee beans this machine on the 6 cup setting produced the following:
Strong = 9 grams (2Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
Medium = 8 grams (about - 1 3/4Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
Mild = 7 grams (about - 1 1/2Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
I can't imagine that one couldn't find a setting to their liking when you consider you have increments of 2 cups with 3 settings (strong, medium and mild) each.

Moka Express 6 Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker by Bialetti Review

Moka Express 6 Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker by Bialetti
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have been spending a pretty penny at the local coffee shop, so I began looking for inexpensive home alternatives. Most of the coffee snobs claim you have to purchase a $200+ machine and $150+ grinder to have a decent cup of espresso. I turned instead to the frugal Italians. They did invent the stuff, afterall. My Bialetti Moka Express coffee pot came this afternoon. I was a little concerned that a $20 pot might not meet the high standards of the gourmet beverages wifey and I have become accustomed to. I was wrong. The brew made by this ingenious little pot is a little weaker than "pumped" espresso and lacks the foamy cap (crema) that all the snobs rave about, but mixed with some hot, frothed milk and a bit of chocolate syrup I couldn't tell the difference between Bialetti and Seattle's Best.
This rich brew comes from a tiny little aluminum contraption with no moving parts, no electronic gizmos, no pump handle and virtually no wait time or clean-up. You just fill, brew and pour. It's that simple. Its base only covers half of the stovetop's smallest eye and I expect it will be easy to store due to its diminuitive size. I've already had three cups of homemade mocha today, and I've only had the pot since noon! *jitter jitter* The point is this: If you're a coffee lover who is bored with Folgers from a Mr. Coffee drip machine or is spending way too much at Starbucks, the Moka pot is an inexpensive and easy-to-use alternative with excellent results.

Lavazza Gran Crema Espresso, 2.2-pounds Box (Pack of 150) Review

Lavazza Gran Crema Espresso, 2.2-pounds Box (Pack of 150)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these to use with a Handpresso portable espresso maker. The first few shots that I made came out a bit too quickly (as others have mentioned) and had a slightly wattery taste with very little crema.
THIS ISSUE CAN BE RESOLVED!
After the first few shots, I decided to add some additional tamping pressure to the pod by pressing down on it with a solid object (I found that a mason jar or coffee mug both worked great) with the hopes that this would increase brewing time and provide a more satisfying shot.
It worked, and now my shots come out perfect, with good flavor and tons of crema. I have to give these pods four stars for the poor tamping, but fortunately this is something that can be resolved quite easily.

La Pavoni PA-1200 Napolitana Stainless Steel Automatic Espresso Machine Review

La Pavoni PA-1200 Napolitana Stainless Steel Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
La Pavoni PA-1200 Napolitana Stainless Steel Automatic Espresso Machine
This is my third machine in 12 years. My first machine was a Krups Novo with a thermal heat block and a back pressure or modified filter holder. My second machine was a Starbucks Barista with a stainless steel boiler but also with a back pressure filter holders which produce a simulated espresso. The La Pavoni Napoletana is the real thing. You can't make or buy a better espresso.
This is an excellent espresso machine for the starter or the advanced barista. Heats up quickly and the heavy brass boiler, brass head and filter holder keep the machine ready for use. Consistently pulls espresso with a nice crema. The steam function provides plenty of steam to whip up thick frothed milk for cappuccinos. The grinder is easy to adjust maybe a little loud and holds enough beans for about 14 shots. The grinder isn't centered over the filter so you need to hold the filter tipped towards the back to keep the coffee in the holder. The machine is solid stainless steel, the drip trays are plastic but good enough. The reservoir holds 3 liters and is a little tight to remove and replace. The pump supplies plenty of pressure. I use the grinder setting between 5 - 4 depending on the bean.
Note: If you want a real espresso machine stay away from the machines with thermal heat blocks or steel boilers and any machine that uses a back pressure or modified filter holders isn't going to make a real espresso.

very good machine. if you don't invest in, or already have, a good coffee grinder, you might have to work with the local grocer or starbucks to get a grind that is perfect (i use starbucks). i've had my machine almost two years. it is solid quality construction, and it pulls a perfect shot every single time. the steamer is much faster than my last machine and doesn't loose power after the first pitcher of foam.

Bialetti Mukka Express Pressure Valve Review

Bialetti Mukka Express Pressure Valve
Average Reviews:

I had to replace the valve after inadvertently dropping the original down the garbage disposal. My Mukka Express was only a year old, but the valve that came with the coffee maker did not always froth the milk and even contributed to leaks. This one is much tighter, and they have changed the color of the gasket to red to ensure that you replace it as well. They have quite good customer service, so if you have a Mukka that is leaking, etc. they will send you a replacement valve for free. I purchased this one since it was my fault.

This is the perfect home espresso/lungo maker. It is compact so it does not take much room on the counter. The frother can be put away. That was important to me. It has 19 bars of pressure and m makes excellent coffee. You do have to purchase the pods from Nespresso but they offer 16+ varieties and strengths and are reasonably priced. When I first stumbled onto a demonstration in a department store I was impressed by the quality of the lungo, a mini cappucino. I listened to comments from a few of the bystanders, some who said they were purchasing a second machine for a vacation home. At first I thought that strange, but guess what? That is exactly what this purchase was, a second machine for my vacation home. As soon as you press the button, the coffee is dispensed and the aroma fills the room. The crema on top is thick, and the coffee is hot. I even can drink it without sweetener.
If you truly love espress/lungo you will not be disappointed. The frother is great. I use 1% milk and it froths in less than 1 minute. Cleanup could not be easier. I have served 8 people in less than 5 minutes.

Average Reviews:

I've had a Tassimo machine (not the same one) for nearly four years now, and have tried most if not all of the discs available through Amazon. While I haven't been thrilled with any of the other Maxwell House discs particularly (I like a strong cup of coffee, but there are a wide variety of preferences on this issue), I've been very, very pleased with the French Roast. It gives a strong but smooth brew and you can't beat the price--at the time I'm writing this you can get 2 packs of 16 discs of the MH French Roast for under $14, compared to 2 packs of 12 discs for more than $20 for the Starbucks blends. I still buy Starbucks, particularly the Africa Kitamu, and Seattle's Best, particularly Henry's Blend, because I like variety in my cup of Joe, but MH's French Roast is great choice, especially if you have multiple coffee drinkers in the house and need to keep plenty of discs on hand while still keeping within your food budget!

Espressione 1332-W Cafe Charme Espresso/Cappuccino Machine, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would never normally give 1 star to anything except if it is dead on arrival and not fixable- obviously there is a design flaw so unforgivable, this is why it is being sold for likely half of what is was originally priced to retail for. I wanted a white retro cappucinno machine for my newly remodeled mid-century modern kitchen. I was willing to pay at least 2-500, as I am quite addicted to fine espresso and prefer it in the morning to coffee. This machine looked attractive but had no reviews I could locate. I felt it was a risk and saw it priced well below what it used to retail for. (more red flags) I thought I'd risk it, because if it was decent, I would save a couple a' c notes. Too bad for me.I eagerly tried to start it, read the directions and followed each step to the letter. Tried to prime it (run some water through the unit before making an actual espresso) but absolutely NO water was coming out. I was mystifyed- but re-read the instructions just in case I missed some minut detail of incredible importance. I checked the tank to see if I was crazy & forgot to fill it. Totally full tank of water, just sitting there. I emptied the tank, and I inspected the hose. I then saw "IT". A BIG JAGGED TEAR in the cheap plastic water delivery tube. So big of a tear it was hanging by a thread! I could not believe it- because there is NO WAY this damage could have occurred via any type of shipping. The hose was not something that could be removed without completely diss-assembling the unit either. So I could not even attempt to fix it w/o voiding any return policy! I had to return it. It was so un-believable, I took some photos to email to Amazon if the seller disputed the return- I politely emailed the company explaining the issue just as I've stated. Surprisingly, they did not even question this odd type of damage and curtly (no apology offered either) told me they would pick it up via Fed X. weirdly fast response. somewhat suspicious if these defective machine was a return, and was being sold again by folks that hope someone will forget to return it after purchasing? Oh well.. Just don't buy it.

Nescafe Dolce Gusto by Krups Piccolo Coffee Machine Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto by Krups Piccolo Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this coffee machine yesterday at Walmart after much research into Keurig, Tassimo and Senseo units.
My first impression is that it's compact and ideal for the counter top. It's much simpler than the others in that there aren't a great number of moving parts. It is basic, but I really didn't need another LCD clock! The on-off switch glows red when the machine is thinking and goes green when ready. After 5 minutes it shuts itself off. This auto-shut-off can be disabled if you so choose. The simplicity should mean it's more reliable. Time will tell!
It's quick to brew (20-30 secs?) and makes little noise/vibration and the coffee is nice and hot. Keurig seems to have a lot of quality issues mechanically and with brew strength/temp. if you read the reviews. With the DG you turn it on, it thinks for about 20-30 secs then it's ready to brew. The capsule drops into a plastic, but nicely solid and substantial holder that you slide out of the head of the machine after raising a lever that, when closed pierces the capsule and snugs it in place. You move another chunky lever to brew and stop brewing, choosing hot or cold with the lever direction, so you have direct control over the type, amount and strength of the brew.
I found the Caffee Americano way too strong for my liking at about the recommended 7 or so fl oz, so I continued to fill my cup with more to weaken it. The Chococino really tastes and feels like Hot Chocolate if you keep to the recommended water volume. It might take a while to get to know how you brew the drink to best suit your taste.
The price of the capsules is comparable to the competitors, though Nescafe hasn't the variety offered by Keurig - give it time perhaps. Walmart has good stocks of the capsules. Nescafe also sends you a free box when you register and subsequent purchases earn reward points for more free capsules (1 free box for 10 bought). Their website is like a coffee lover's club with a forum, shop, quizzes, FAQ and product information.
The coffee and chocolate is very good in that it is strong, hot and the milk capsules that accompany such drinks are smooth and creamy and not at all artificial in terms of taste/texture. You do have to control the relative quantities of milk/coffee/chocolate yourself with each capsule, so you have to watch over the brew, but then you have total control to make it like you like
The reservoir is 21 fl oz and is very easy to remove and fill, if a little small. But then you can't have compact and water capacity!
The capsules make very little mess, though I note that when you remove the holder to throw away the capsule, there are a couple drips from the capsule to watch out for.
So far I like it and would recommend it if you want this type of coffee maker. It does make good coffee and chocolate quickly with no mess.
UPDATE: Dec 8 2010
So far so good. I have learned to control the strength of my Cappuccino Light by watching the color (hence strength) of the stream coming from the capsules and turning off the brew. It also helps using the same glass cup as I can also judge the volumes of the milk and coffee. I have eliminated the drips from the capsules when discarding; wait until the green light comes on, watch for the last couple drops to fall, then discard - no drips and the capsule holder remains nice and clean.
Everything really does feel solid and well-built. Very happy so far.
UPDATE Dec 29 2010
Still happy with it. No problems at all. I didn't notice before but the capsule holder is magnetic in that when it is partially inserted, the magnet pulls it into position. This gives it a nice solid feel, which is my general opinion about this whole unit.
I use a large glass cup (so I can see how much milk Vs Coffee) that uses almost all the capacity of the water reservoir. I don't like strong coffee and fill the cup 3/4 full with the milk (that's why the Dolce Gusto is good; you choose how much water to flow through the capsules) and then I add the cappuccino. I still get a good flavor though as the capsules can make really strong coffee). This large cup requires the base to be set at the bottom, but is too tall for the next position up for the base. This leaves about a 2" gap under the capsule holder. When the unit starts up, it looks like the 15 bar pressure blows the seal in the bottom of the capsule. There is a slight delay, then you can hear the seal give way and the milk or coffee starts to flow. Occasionally, the stream from the capsule is not straight and columnar. It is twisted and rough. This looks to me like the seal is not completely opened by the pressure and part of the seal is disturbing the flow pattern. This is when I see some spatter of tiny milk droplets onto the coffee machine and onto the table; splashes from the liquid surface in my cup. No big deal, but just have to wipe it up with a damp cloth. With the right height of cup, this won't happen.
I have settled to drinking the Cappuccino Skinny. I like Cappuccino and the Skinny version is only 50 calories! I use this in my office, making 2-3 cups per day.

Strikingly modern in a sleek, compact size, this single-serve coffeemaker not only adds contemporary appeal to any kitchen counter--without taking up a lot of space--but it also brews up delicious beverages quickly and effortlessly. The unit works with easy-to-use capsules that come sealed with pre-measured ingredients for mess-free brewing and foolproof results. Choose from a variety of hot drinks--espresso, caffe lungo, caffe americano, cappuccino, mocha, and more--as well as cold drinks like cappuccino ice and peach tea.
To use, simply add water to the 21-ounce removable water tank, insert the coffee or tea capsule into the magnetic capsule holder, secure the locking handle, and slide the selection lever to hot or cold depending on the beverage desired. With a press of the "on" button, the machine takes care of the rest, dispensing the beverage into whatever cup has been placed below. When finished, discard the used coffee capsule, rinse the capsule holder, and the machine's ready for the next cycle--without any transfer of flavor from one cup to the next (beverages never come in contact with the machine).
The single-serve multi-purpose beverage machine comes equipped with 1500 watts of power, for fast heating in less than a minute, and a 15-bar Thermoblock pump pressure system that helps ensure a foamy froth, rich crema, and full flavor (other single-cup home brewers offer only 1 to 3 bars of pressure). The machine's Custom Control Lever allows for instantly alternating between hot and cold beverages or for customizing the strength and mixture (for multi-capsule drinks). Other highlights include an on/off button, energy-saving auto shut-off, a height-adjustable drip tray with a stainless-steel grid for any size cup or glass, and dishwasher-safe parts for quick cleanup. Accessories include a six-count variety pack of capsules, quick start guide, step-by-step instructions, and a welcome brochure. The single-serve beverage machine measures 8-2/3 by 6-1/4 by 11-2/7 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

How It Works
NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® machines heat water, which is passed at high pressure - a maximum of 15 bars -into the coffee cup through a capsule of high-quality NESCAFÉ® roast and ground coffee. The coffee that is used in the capsules is made of premium 100% Arabica beans.

The high pressure and the capsules are designed to deliver an even distribution of water and pressure over the coffee to ensure that flavor is maximized. This system uses pressure similar to that of professional machines.

While drip coffee machines operate at one bar of pressure (normal atmospheric pressure) and a number of competing machines operate at no more than two bars, the NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® system can operate at up to 15 bars of pressure. Each capsule makes one cup of coffee in under a minute.

Krups Espresso Machine, Precise Tamp Programmable XP5280 Review

Krups Espresso Machine, Precise Tamp Programmable XP5280
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this machine at the recommendation of a knowledgeable salesperson at a local cooking store called Great News (Pacific Beach). I really liked the programmable feature, after returning a different model that did not have the preset for espresso pour duration. I also like the "precise tamp" feature as it saves a step and works well. I find that by using a Cuisinart Conical Burr grinder to freshly grind the beans(I use illy beans exclusively), and by following the directions for proper priming(1st use), cleaning, and operation - the resulting espresso and latte drinks are excellent. It consistently turns out great tasting espresso with generous amounts of "crema", and steams milk well(I recommend getting an instant read thermometer for steamed milk which indicates proper heating temerature between 150 and 170 degrees - mine is from a company called CDN). One minor issue is the steam nozzle. Mine did break after about 4 months - one of the clips that hold the nozzle to the steam wand broke - I called the company and they sent me a new one. Pluses - when used properly this machine turns out great and repeatable results for both espresso and steamed milk. Minus - Steam wand nozzle must be handled with care and cleaned often. By the way folks - make sure you read the directions on how to disassemble and clean the nozzle - if you don't it gets pretty disgusting inside.

Krups Coffree Grinder Review

Krups Coffree Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had my grinder for 12 years now. It works the same today as it did new, and I use it about 10 times a week. For the money, it can't be beat. That said, this grinder is not for everybody.
This grinder is perfect for anybody with a coffee maker that uses #4 paper CONE filters (or slightly bigger or smaller). I emphasize PAPER because a permanent filter is not good for this grinder. Like any blade grinder, it will produce some dust. That creeps through the permafilter and into your pot is makes sludge. It sloppies up your coffee. Nothing gets through paper filters though.
It also grinds coffee fine. You really don't have a choice. It is ok for espresso as well if you are not a connoisseur. If you try a coarse grind with this unit, you will be out of luck. If you don't grind long enough, you will leave a few beans whole or in large pieces.
If you need anything other than a fine grind and don't mind using paper filters (I prefer them), then look no further.
I deducted a star because it has limitations, but the truth is, for probably 80% of the coffee drinkers out there, this grinder is all you need.
