Review for: Cuisinart Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew 12 Cup Coffeemaker
First a heads-up... the product's picture shows a "black" carafe which might lead you to believe it is a thermal carafe. This is not the case, it is actually a glass carafe filled to the brim with coffee. As such, be forewarned that this product does not include a thermal carafe (I was fooled, but it's interesting to note that Amazon suggested I include "thermal carafe" when "tagging" this review.) Instead, it ships with a glass carafe and features a hot-plate that has a programmable auto shut-off.
My disappointment with the carafe aside, this product has worked marvelously (received it three weeks ago.) It houses a burr grinder as opposed to a cheap blade grinder. It cleans up very easily compared to my old "Melitta MEMB1 Mill & Brew" (less than two minutes to rinse the carafe and filter-chamber/cap; after drying it's ready to be loaded with a new filter in less than 30 seconds.) The bean-hopper has a good seal to it, although I am unsure as to whether the clear plastic used offers UV protection (I would prefer to see a shaded plastic used to protect the beans inside; but I suppose the clear plastic offers a better design-element and the functionality of being able to see the level of beans inside.) And, in terms of the most important aspect, it makes great tasting coffee! (My girlfriend still marvels daily at how good the coffee is.)
Having owned and operated a coffee shop a few years back, I thought I might emphasize the importance of buying a burr grinder vs a blade grinder (for those of you who are interested and new to the art of making gourmet coffee.) First, burr grinders do not produce nearly the level of heat that can be produced by blade grinders. Heat denatures the delicate flavors of the beans (which is also why I was disappointed by having a glass carafe that sits over a direct source of high-heat.) Second, burr grinders ensure that each particle of ground coffee is consistent in size; meaning flavor extraction can be truly optimized and achieved with consistency... The flavor of your coffee is based on the contact time between the beans' chemicals and water; varied sizes of particles means the chemicals are exposed to water for varying amounts of time, and the chemicals have varied distances to travel to escape the fibers of the bean particles. A blade grinder results in variably-variable sizes of particles... meaning variable flavors escaping the clutches of the bean fibers. If you are planning to spend the extra money to buy high-quality beans, it is important to both preserve the chemicals inside (destroyed by heat, light and oxygen) and to extract them in a reasonable manner that enables isolation of the chemicals responsible for "good" flavors.
If the science of coffee interests you, Scientific American had a great article written by Ernesto Illy in June 2002, titled "The Complexity of Coffee." At only 6 pages, it's a pretty quick read and well worth the time. Here's a link: [...]

Eva Solo Cafe Solo Coffeemaker Review

Eva Solo Cafe Solo Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great product for those who want to brew the smoothest, most flavorful coffee possible! But I think perhaps some people don't want to deal with choices in how they prepare their coffee and would rather have the convenience of automation (and pre-packaged blandness)--in which case the CafeSolo, while fairly simple to use, may not be for them.
Better Than...
I started out with a drip coffee maker. After years of making sometimes bitter, sometimes thin, but never great tasting coffee, I looked into Chemex. I was still not satisfied with the pleasant but weak brew that resulted. Finally, I read a rave review of the Eva Solo product on a coffee specialist site. The reviewer (an editor for the site) said he found the CafeSolo to produce a far better brew than either a French press or a vacuum pot, partly because it controls the temperature so well. I like the idea of a full immersion brewing system, so I bought it and immediately produced a very strong cup of the most bitter-free coffee I've ever tasted. I never drink coffee black, yet I was able to drink the result without adding sugar, and still found no bitterness!
The CafeSolo is better than a French press in two other ways. The conical mesh filter is ideally shaped to prevent blockage (the grounds sit outside the inverted cone when you pour), yet has very fine holes. So you can use a finer grind than you would for a French press and won't get any mud in your cup or problems pouring through the filter. As others have mentioned, the pourer and lid are of excellent design. But I said the CafeSolo was better in two other ways. The last reason has to do with the perils of complete extraction.
The Problem with Complete Extraction
"What's wrong with complete extraction?" you ask. The grounds get maximum saturation, so you get the most flavor, right? Yes, and that is why the CafeSolo, or a French press, or an espresso machine will yield a more concentrated brew. But there is a price for all that, in the risk of over-extracted bitterness. If you look at how coffee tasters do a cupping, they pour boiled water into a cup of grounds, let it steep for 1-2 minutes, then gently stir and push the crust of floating grounds to the bottom while taking in the aroma, and lastly remove the remaining floating bits. Then they let the brew continue to steep and cool for another 1-2 minutes before they take their first sip. They will also repeat this tasting as it cools further. During this time, they don't stir the grounds again. That extra agitation at the end of the brewing cycle must be avoided.
Now in an espresso machine, the parameters of temperature, pressure, size of grind, and time of extraction are carefully controlled to minimize over-extraction during the very intense brewing cycle of 15-20 seconds. But during the longer 4 minute steep time of the CafeSolo or a French press, there will be an unavoidable build-up of bitter liquid and over-extracted fine particles in the grounds. With the French press, the act of pushing the plunger down forces liquid through the grounds, flushing the concentrated bitterness and fine particles into the rest of the liquid. The CafeSolo does not have a plunger. The carafe is tilted for pouring and the floating grounds settle under the inverted cone-shaped filter. The liquid flows over the grounds and through the wire mesh, as opposed to being forced through the grounds in order to exit the carafe. As some baristas have reported, the result is the closest thing to an actual cupping, only cleaner. It's for this reason that the CafeSolo tends to be very forgiving, yielding the least bitterness and the most flavor.
The Way of Coffee
Coffee making is an art. If you want a truly outstanding result, you have to refine your technique:
1) I found that I couldn't control the extraction consistently. Also my grounds would have too much fine powder. So I stopped using a blade grinder and bought a KitchenAid Pro Line burr grinder--that solved the problem. (The KitchenAid also does a great job of controlling static explosions of coffee grounds.)
2) I was not happy with the coffee beans. My coffee seemed to be lacking in rich flavor, and dark roasts seemed to have just one flavor: burnt. I stopped buying the stale beans from the supermarket and the over-roasted beans from the popular coffee houses. I tried internet suppliers (2-3 weeks since roast). For the first time, I could taste the flavor profile they described. Eventually I found a local roaster (1-4 days since roast), and my coffee has never been so rich and flavorful (both light and dark).
3) After switching to better coffee, I found that minute changes in the grind and amount greatly affected the result. I was able to fine-tune the setting on my grinder to my liking (I now use a setting of "3" on my KitchenAid). And I bought a small narrow glass container with markings on the side to measure the grounds. I use approx. 10 tbsp., but YMMV--the actual amount is somewhere between 9 and 10 level tbsp., depending on how careful you are (also note that I like a strong cup with sugar and arf 'n' arf). The measuring jar allows me to get a consistent amount without the tedium of measuring out one tbsp. at a time and still getting it wrong. Recently, I discovered it has one other benefit. Because I transfer the grounds from the KitchenAid's catcher jar to my measuring jar using a scoop, I noticed that most of the fine powder was left behind. This will contribute to a cleaner and less bitter cup.
4) Eventually I also came to realize that darker roasted coffees may benefit more from a higher pressure extraction, as you get from an espresso machine. The CafeSolo does bring out the most amazing flavor down to a med-dark roast, but may not be superior for a dark roast. I do get good results from Illy espresso roast, but I think I've had better Illy in a restaurant.
Instructions
Ok, now for the mechanics of how I use the product to brew the perfect cup:
1) Boil 1 liter of water and pour into CafeSolo. Top with filter and lid to heat entire aparatus.
2) Boil another 1.25 liters of water. Use fresh, good tasting (filtered or bottled) water. Do not reboil previously boiled water or it will adversely affect flavor.
3) While second batch of water is coming to a boil, grind beans. Just before it boils, transfer water that was heating CafeSolo into a thermal carafe to warm it. Then pour the fresh coffee grounds into bottom of CafeSolo.
4) Wait 20 seconds after second batch of water boils to let it cool to the right temperature, then pour it into CafeSolo. Stir to control foam and mix up floating grounds, until water level is approx. 1 inch below narrowest point on neck of carafe. Place filter/lid on top, zip the neoprene jacket, and set timer for 4 minutes.
I was surprised at how fresh roasted and ground coffee reacted when I poured in the hot water. There was a huge bloom of foam and grounds that would have overflowed the carafe if I didn't start stirring (I'm told fresh roasted coffee can foul some automatic drip machines for this reason). With the CafeSolo, you end up perfecting your pour and stir technique to get the lid on and the jacket zipped before too much heat loss.
Speaking of heat loss, Coffeegeek mentions that they measured acceptable temperatures using this jacket, whereas a French press would quickly lose 10 degrees or more within just a few minutes. I recall some consumer on a certain cooking site confidently declaring that the temp would drop too much over 4 minutes and the jacket would do no good--all without apparently validating their claims by actually using the product (genius).
5) After 4 minutes, pour out water from thermal carafe and pour coffee from CafeSolo into thermal carafe. Coffee is ready to drink.
If you leave the coffee in the CafeSolo, the grounds will continue to extract and the brew will begin to taste bitter after another 6 mins. Also, I found that mixing up the liquid by pouring it into another carafe always results in a better tasting cup. (This is all relative--that first pour is still better than anything I could produce using other coffee makers.)
Cleanup: Place old discarded conical metal coffee filter from now-departed loathsome drip coffee maker into sink drain. Rinse Eva filter and carafe grounds into old filter, drain and shake out into trash can. Wash inside of CafeSolo carafe (and thermal carafe, if you used one) with hot soapy water using a long flexible brush. Use hot soapy water on the mesh filter, too.
Hope this helps. :-)

Ep-20 20oz Frothing Pitcher with 20oz Milk Volume Review

Ep-20 20oz Frothing Pitcher with 20oz Milk Volume
Average Reviews:

OK, this is a nice pitcher, but it is a little small for enough milk for a large mug of latte. If you drink from those cups that you can't stick your fingers in the holder (The handles with the holes that a 3 year old finger will go into, but you and I have to pinch it between your index finger and thumb and stick your pinky in the air), then this one is for you. If you drink from a mug or a travel mug, then get the 32 oz pitcher. This one sits in the cabinet and only gets used only when I can't find the 32 oz pitcher, after looking for at least 15 minutes.

BW1000A Flojet Bottled Water Dispensing System Review

BW1000A Flojet Bottled Water Dispensing System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is a great way to connect a refrigerator to a bottled water system. A few suggestions if you are considering the purchase of this unit or a similar solution where you need to connect bottled water to your fridge:
1. ITT (Flojet) also makes a "dual" bottled water system which allows you to connect two five gallon water bottles at the same time. They call this the "Dual Inlet Bottled Water Dispensing System" and the model number is BW1020A. If you intend to run both the refrigerator's icemaker and water dispenser and you use a lot of water, consider the dual system. I bought the dual inlet model instead and I'm glad I did, we go through a lot of bottled water since we can't really drink the well water here...
2. In our house, the kitchen shares a wall with the garage, and we were able to easily drill a hole and run the 1/4" line through the wall - this keeps the Flojet pump in a different room and makes changing the bottled water easier since we store it in the garage anyway. If you have the opportunity to setup your system this way, I highly recommend it. Having the pump in a different room is important because the pump is loud when running, and since the icemaker will kick in and out at various times it is nice to have the pump located elsewhere. I don't think I would be happy with this solution if the pump had to be inside the kitchen since the noise would be a real problem.
3. Since virtually every refrigerator with a water connection uses the 1/4" tubing line, and since this unit includes 20' of 1/4" tubing, you don't really need anything to connect this to a refrigerator except for a 1/4" tubing union, which is not included. You could get one at your local hardware store, but Amazon has them and they are Prime eligible, here is the link: Celcon Acetal Copolymer "Push to Connect" Tubing Connector - Union Connector , 1/4". These are the easiest possible connectors to use, just push the tubing in on both sides and you're done. Here is another example of a 1/4" union: JACO Bulkhead Union - 1/4 inch Tube O.D. Female x 1/4 inch Tube O.D. Female just in case that one is gone...

Vev Vigano 8194 Kontessa Inox 4-cup Coffee Pot
Average Reviews:

given the quality of bean, the Vev Vigano makes a good tasting espresso. parts fit together well and easily. an eye appealing design, the Kontessa looks beautiful on display in the kitchen.
the design flaw in the Kontessa espresso maker is that the tank is lined with non-stainless steel material which easily corrodes. this is not coffee stain; it has the appearance and feel of rust. this rusting occurred even with reasonable care and cleaning including proper drying following each, most often daily use and within the first three months after purchase.
i will not use the Kontessa espresso maker because of its obvious health hazard. i would have returned it to the manufacturer if the process of returning it was less than the expense of purchasing it.

Motta Imported Italian Espresso Milk Steaming Pitcher - 16 Oz. - Milk Frothing Pitcher Review

Motta Imported Italian Espresso Milk Steaming Pitcher - 16 Oz. - Milk Frothing Pitcher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I intend this as a review of the 12 oz. Motta Imported Italian Espresso Milk Steaming pitcher, not the 16 oz., because that one is too big for steaming milk in my machine. The 12 oz. Motta is perfect for steaming for one or two espressos at a time (depending on how much milk per shot you want). I actually steam soy, rice or almond milk and also homemade hazelnut milk in this. Anyway, don't bother ordering the less expensive pitchers because a) they're still pricey and b) this one works the best. Just go ahead and get the Motta. We've been using it nearly daily for over a year and it looks new. This pitcher is heavier and has a better spout for pouring and making designs than the cheaper one with a square spout that I also had ordered. Finally, I like that it is made in Italy.

Teaposy Celebrate Gift Set Review

Teaposy Celebrate Gift Set
Average Reviews:

I had never seen a Teaposy tea blossom before so I really had no idea what to expect when I took it out of the package. It looked like a large, oddly shaped pellet of sorts that was rolled up tight with one end that was tightly tied with a strip of tea leaf. I placed it into the glass teapot (which was very pretty!) and poured in boiling water, as directed.I was a little hesitant about pouring boiling water into a glass vessel, especially one that looked as delicate as the Teaposy pot did. It held up quite nicely, however, and as mentioned on the company's website it is heat resistant.I did not notice an immediate change in the tea 'ball' and stepped out of the room for a moment to deal with a puppy who was terrorizing my house and when I returned a few minutes later a beautiful blossom was steeping in the tea pot! The only issue I had with the Teaposy pot was that I tried to take the lid off after steeping and the handle of the lid was rather hot. It is not necessary to take off the lid, I just wanted to stick my face in there and get a better view of the blossom! The handle to the pot itself stayed completely cool!I love that the blossoms are made from white tea which has very little caffeine and is very high in antioxidants. I am also thrilled that no artificial flavors are used in scenting the tea!If I could suggest one change to the company it would be to find a more ecologically friendly way to package their teas. Each one comes vacuum sealed in a plastic type envelope and I would love some kind of packaging that was biodegradable.Overall, I was thrilled with this product and highly recommend it for anyone who is a true fan of tea!Discaimer: I was provided with one Teaposy pot and a selection of teas in order to write my review. All opinions expressed here are mine and mine alone.

Copco Brushed 4 to 8-Cup Stainless Steel Stovetop Percolator
Average Reviews:

I have used this type of stove top coffee pot for years, and had my old one for probably eight years or so.
When I found this one I was happy to know I could continue to brew coffee atop the stove, my favorite.
This coffee pot was a dissapointment. As soon as I took it out of the box I noticed the handle was a bit loose. Within a couple of weeks, the handle broke off. It was if it had been glued to the pot, as there was no hole into the pot where the handle was. The coffee pot is pretty much useless now, a big dissapointment.
I hate to write bad reviews, but felt it only fair to tell the truth about my experience.
Quite possibly, I received a defective pot and it is a chance thing.
I will not order any more though on line.

Sure Starbucks will sell you a seven dollar glass of milk with foam on it ..You COULD buy an overpriced espresso machine that comes with a steam wand and foam your milk...(Wuss)
B U T ...if you can live with all the flavor and none of the foam (and have a little skill) ..
Vev Vigano Itaca 4 cup Espresso maker is the slick , shiny , well made, durable little 18/10 stainless steel bomb for up to two people, with an espresso addiction
You'll have to polish your barista skills (grind and Tamp)...practice with and regular cleaning of the Itaca will be rewarded with crema and flavor ..lazyness will keep you in line at starbucks feeding a foam addiction...
Do the math ...I dropped forty five CA on the Itaca and inside of seven days had consumed enough large lattes (twenty one of them) to require I take out a small loan to feed this same espresso addiction @ starbucks (I'm hooked on espresso, not foam, but if YOU need foam ..use an egg whip on your separately heated milk ...you wussies :)
REAL men only need apply to operate the Itaca..(it s all analog baby)
it gets hot and burns the fingers , it can spit out pure crap if the shot is not tamped and ground properly (imagine that)and if you overheat it, bitterness is the reward..plus you have to clean it after every use AND it takes just a weee bit longer than making a cup of instant...
It s worth it all... for the flavor..it s really really good ..it s really addictive ...I may have to sue ...and I dont miss and or need the foam on my latte ...
Arrrrrr ..Have you ever been to sea without an espresso machine Billy? ....

I've had this product for several months now. I'm actually rather disappointed. It has 17 grind selections, but we find we can only use the highest number or else the chute clogs with dust after just one or two grinds. I've been happy with that grind setting when using my French Press, but less than impressed when using it in my drip machine. There's also a static issue that drives me up the wall, making a mess every time we remove the cup to dump the grounds into the basket.
All in all, had I known these things before purchasing it... we wouldn't have spent our money. We could have stuck with a blade grinder and gotten the same quality with a lot less mess.
