I chose the Capresso EC100 Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Machine because I love a good cup of coffee. Attempting to add variety to my morning beverage selection, I wanted to be able to brew expresso and cappuccino at home. Unfortunately, I was not sufficiently impressed with the product or with the beverages it produced to allow me to give it greater than a 3-star rating.
The footprint of the Capresso EC100 Pump Espresso is quite reasonable; I give it a good score on that point. The instruction booklet was clearly written and the diagram easy to understand. However, I feel the Capresso EC100 Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Machine is lacking in other more important areas.
The removeable, plastic tank is marked as minimum and maximum with respect to capacity, but nowhere is there actual information on what constitutes the actual minimum and maximum. I found that minimum equaled 8 ounces; the maximum, 48 ounces. Because the basket is made of a hard plastic, as are the prongs which attach it to the machine, I would not recommend removing it from the unit to fill it. There is a significant possibility that the plastic will crack because of repeated removal. It is easy to pour water into and by doing so, you should minimize the chances of the prongs breaking or of your dropping the tank and having it shatter. The brewing basket is awkward to place and lock in; I found myself bending down in an attempt to see the opening so I could insert the basket correctly.
I thought this unit required more work than I was willing to do in order to obtain my morning caffeine fix. The machine must be preheated before brewing your beverage. If one fills the tank to capacity, the machine must be monitored during brewing; otherwise, it will simply keep pumping liquid until it is completely empty. I thought the brewed beverage was quite weak even after stopping with a 6 ounce "cup." I used an expresso grind in the 2 cup pod and was still unhappy with the brew strength.
With respect to removing the used coffee grounds, this machine is messy. If you tamp the grounds as instructed, you must "pry" them out with a spoon after brewing. Frankly, this resulted in a mess. I did not find the thought of extra clean-up appealing.
The Capresso EC100 Pump Expresso and Cappuccino Machine did not meet my expectations. While some reviewers may find it a worthy addition to their kitchen appliance collection, I thought it was only an average item and not worth the cost.
