My previous XP4030 began failing after 2 years (knob heating up, pump failing sporadically), so I shopped around, considering moving to a more strongly engineered machine, but locating the same model, factory refurbished, for under $40 ended that search. As far as I can tell, in looks and performance, this refurbished machine is as good as new. The 15-bar XP4030 makes an excellent cup (thick and aromatic crema, at least with Peet's French Roast) and creates fine foam for a cappuccino or cortado. I don't know if I would pay the $180 retail price for a brand new one--and since it's no longer Krups's latest machine in this range, it may be difficult to find new, in any case.
It has the usual limitation of pump models in this range: it has a single tank for coffee and foam, so you have to wait about a minute for the pressure to build for foam after you've made the coffee; and making more than one cup w/foam at a time (for guests) can take time and process and risk the coffee's cooling in the meantime. The pump is also rather noisy--but that gives you an indication of its power.
I don't know if a two-year life is typical for this machine; my daughter has one also--perhaps she maintains it better or doesn't use it as frequently--and hers is still going strong at four years.
